Center- Kenai Medical ClinicHave been feeling particularly anxious, depressed, or irritable lately? How do you know if it’s time to seek help?
One medical practitioner says that this is primarily caused  by the level of LDL—the “bad” type of cholesterol—that is too high, and that the  level of HDL—the “good” cholesterol—is too low.
A recent article from usnews.com suggested  10 ways to lower your LDL and raise your HDL level.
1. Taking a statin can lower LDL by 10 percent.
2. A cholesterol absorption inhibitor would be a likely next step for those who can’t take statins because of side effects,
3. Bile acid sequestrants can decrease LDL by about 10 to 20 percent.
4. Nicotinic acid, also known as niacin, is a water-soluble B vitamin that lowers LDL by 10 to 20 percent.
5. Fibrates are mostly effective at lowering triglycerides and in heightening HDL levels, according to NHLBI.
6. Lose weight .
7. Limit saturated fats.
8. Avoid trans fats, which have been purged from many prepared foods but are found in small quantities in some animal products.
As a rule, try to limit your intake of trans fats to less than 1 percent of your total calories on any given day
9. Have an occasional drink. Drinking alcohol increases HDL levels slightly but doesn’t decrease LDL,
10. Quit smoking.
