The pancreas is an organ that is responsible for producing digestive enzymes that are secreted into the intestine to aid in digesting food. In addition, the pancreas is also responsible for secreting metabolic hormones, such as insulin, glucagon and others.

Pancreatitis is defined as inflammation of the pancreas. In the cat, when the pancreas becomes inflamed, the protective measures that keep the digestive enzymes safely stored within the pancreas are disrupted and the escape of the enzymes from the pancreas results in damage to the pancreas itself as well as to the liver because of its location near the pancreas.

Causes of Pancreatitis in Cats

In the majority of the cases of feline pancreatitis, the cause remains unknown. However, there are some factors that are known to be associated with pancreatitis in cats.

* Inflammatory bowel disease has been associated with pancreatitis. It is believed that abnormalities within the intestinal tract cause an overgrowth of bacteria which may be capable of colonizing the pancreas and causing infection/inflammation.
* Trauma to the pancreas can cause pancreatitis. Trauma may result from an accident (i.e. a car accident or fall).
* Feline distemper virus and toxoplasmosis can infect the feline pancreas and cause pancreatitis.
* Organophosphate compounds may be found in home and garden insecticidal products and exposure to them may cause pancreatitis.

Symptoms of Feline Pancreatiis

In dogs, the most common symptoms seen with pancreatitis are nausea, vomiting and a painful abdomen. Ingestion of a high fat diet predisposes some dogs to developing pancreatitis. In cats, the symptoms of the disease are often more subtle and high fat intake does not appear to be associated with feline pancreatitis.

Top five dog grooming basics. A very important part of dog ownership.

1. Hair Brushing
Regardless of hair type, you can brush your dog daily – especially if he enjoys it. More frequent brushing during shedding season can help prevent hair build-up and excess shedding.

2. Nail Trimming
Most dogs dislike even having their paws handled and know how much it hurts when nails are cut too short. Dog owners are often uncomfortable with the process for fear of hurting their dogs. Dogs will develop an aversion to nail trimming once they experience pain from it. The best way to avoid this is to learn how to trim nails correctly and exercise caution. Ideally, a veterinary technician, vet, or groomer should teach you how to trim your dog’s nails.

3. Bathing
Bath time does not mean fun to most dogs and owners. It may bring forth an image of a wet dog running from the tub, dripping all over the house. Bathing does not have to be this way if your dog can get used to it. He may not like the bath, but he’ll be easier to manage. Learn how to bathe your dog properly and make the experience as positive as you can for you and your dog.

4. Ear Care
Your dog’s ears can be a haven for bacteria and yeast if not kept clean. Some dogs can go their whole lives without ear problems, and the only routine ear cleaning needed is during the monthly bath. Other dogs have chronic ear disease and require multiple cleanings a day. Ear problems can often be traced back to genetics. Dogs with floppy ears or long hair tend to be predisposed to ear problems because the ear canal simply does not have as much air exposure. Many ear problems are a sign of allergies. If your dog has excess debris or foul odor in his ears, your veterinarian will likely prescribe special ear cleaners and medications.

5. Haircuts
Dogs with continuously growing hair, such as the Poodle or Shih Tzu, typically need their hair cut every 2-4 weeks depending on the breed of the dog and the style of the cut. This task is often best left to professional groomers, though many dog owners are able to learn some basic maintenance haircuts. Here’s How:

1. Stand over your pet viewing the back. Look for a nice curved indentation in the area of the waist (just behind the rib cage). A pet with a “straight line” from head to tail, or even a bowed-out line along the back, could likely mean that your pet is overweight.

2. View your pet from the side. There should be a nice “tuck up” area behind the rib cage and before the hind legs. A pet with a “straight line” or a saggy area in the belly area could likely mean that your pet is overweight. Cats are especially prone to fat collecting in the belly area; areas that are easily viewable from the side.

3. Gently run your fingers along your pet’s rib cage. The ribs should be felt easily and the skin should glide over the ribs smoothly, as opposed to large “sheets” of fat moving along the ribs.

4. View your pet’s face. A rounded face or visible folds of skin around the face and under the chin could likely mean that your pet is overweight — this depends somewhat on breed.

5. Check the area above the base of the tail; overweight pets have extra padding and folds in this location.
